What’s the Problem?

September 5, 2017 – The collision occurred at 2:25 p.m. on August 16, at the corner of Geary Boulevard and Third Avenue, according to the San Francisco Examiner. The autonomous vehicle, a Volvo XC90, was rear ended at the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Third Avenue after its human driver disengaged its self-driving technology to allow pedestrians to cross, the report said.
The wreck caused minor damage to the Volvo’s hatch but there were no injuries reported onsite, although the Uber driver later reported wrist discomfort.
This is the first time a collision has been reported to the DMV since Uber obtained a permit in March to test its self-driving cars in California. The troubled ridesharing company obtained the permit following its decision to test those vehicles in San Francisco without a permit, which sparked a fierce battle with state and local officials.
An Uber spokesperson said there’s still a long way to go before the self-driving cars are put into service, and that the vehicles require human monitoring and intervention in some conditions.
Uber reiterated that the vehicle was in manual mode, with the human driver in control of the car, when the accident occurred.
