What’s the Problem?

June 21, 2017 – The defendant, 36-year-old Bonifacio Enriquez, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Nassau County Court to second-degree manslaughter and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to Patch.

Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas recommended a sentence of 3 to 9 years in prison for Enriquez.

On April 7, 2016, Uber driver Roohul Ameen was driving a Toyota Camry in the eastbound HOV lane in Jericho, New York, when he hit the median, stepped out of the car to tie up his bumper, and was struck by a silver Ford Escape and a blue Nissan Altima at 2:05 a.m. The driver of the Altima remained on the scene while the driver of the Ford SUV fled.

Police located Enriquez, the driver of the the Ford, and placed him under arrest on suspicion of DWI, which he was charged with later that day. The DA said Enriquez’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was at least .12, or .4 higher than the legal limit of .08.

The DA said Enriquez was driving nearly 70 mph when he struck Ameen’s Camry, which was disabled with its hazard warning lights on. Enriquez attempted to pass the disabled vehicle just before impact by trying to drive between it and the concrete median. The SUV struck the Camry on the rear driver’s side panel, continued forward and struck Ameen, who was thrown into the left lane and killed.
