What’s the Problem?
August 8, 2017 – The Uber driver, 52-year-old Richard Massenburg, is being held on $250,000 bail at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building on one count of reckless homicide and numerous traffic citations stemming from the June 11 accident in the Belmont-Cragin community on the Northwest Side of Chicago.
Police say Massenburg had marijuana in his bloodstream at the time of the accident, which occurred when he sped through a red light at more than 80 miles per hour at the intersection of Diversey and Cicero avenues, striking the first of several vehicles around 9:50 a.m.
According to prosecutors, the first collision killed Javier Castrejon and seriously injured his wife, while sending their car crashing into the vehicle in front of them, which was driven by a 28-year-old woman who was also injured. Massenburg’s car then continued north on Cicero until it collided with another car at the intersection.
Castrejon was pronounced dead from massive head and torso trauma shortly after being rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. He was a graduate of Schurz High School and father of two, according to his obituary.
Castrejon worked as a sales clerk for a tool retailer and was a security guard at a banquet hall at the time of his death. His wife, who was knocked unconscious in the crash, was treated for multiple fractures and a concussion.
Massenburg tested positive for the active ingredient in marijuana after being transported to Mount Sinai Hospital. Prosecutors have identified him as the driver of the vehicle that crashed into Castrejon, and an employee of Uber who was on duty at the time of the accident.
A spokesman for the troubled ridesharing company said that Massenburg was fired immediately upon news of the incident. He was arrested Friday when he appeared for his traffic court hearing, and is scheduled to return to court next week.
