Ingredient-level analysis of 190 cases who reported eating at Taco Bell showed that 90% had consumed iceberg lettuce. Taylor Farms de Mexico sourced the implicated lettuce from central Mexico, and the FDA has increased border screening for products implicated in the outbreak.
What Is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that infects the small intestine and causes cyclosporiasis — an illness marked by frequent, sometimes explosive watery diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, weight loss, and profound fatigue [3]. Symptoms typically begin about one week after exposure and can last weeks or recur in repeated relapses if left untreated.
Unlike most foodborne pathogens, Cyclospora cannot be removed from contaminated produce by rinsing or washing. It is transmitted through fecal contamination of food or water — most commonly in produce grown in regions where the parasite is endemic.
Incidents and Injuries
As of July 17, 2026, a total of 1,644 people infected with Cyclospora and reporting Taco Bell exposure have been confirmed across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
