What’s the Problem?
December 8, 2016 – Plaintiff Connie Shatswell of Mustang, Oklahoma, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and although she beat the disease and is now cancer-free, her life has still not returned to normal. That’s because her hair has not grown back following chemotherapy with Taxotere, according to the lawsuit.
“I never was a girly girl,” she said. “My hair was the one thing I knew could make me look more like a girl.”
Shatswell claims she knew that temporary hair loss was a potential side effect of chemotherapy treatment, but never imagined it would be permanent. Then she saw a post on social media that pointed to Taxotere as a potential reason for her condition.
A 2014 study conducted by the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) found that approximately 15% of women who were treated with Taxotere lost their hair and never grew it back. Nearly 3 million U.S. women currently have a history of breast cancer, and about 75% of them undergo chemo with Taxotere, according to NCRI.
Shatswell is hoping her lawsuit will force Sanofi to be accountable for not warning of Taxotere’s long-lasting side effects.
“Anybody that has hair, they have bad hair days and get so upset,” she said. “Can you imagine looking in the mirror and not seeing you? The you, you know?”
In October, a panel of judges ruled that all federal lawsuits alleging permanent hair loss from Taxotere be centralized in the Eastern District of Louisiana for pretrial handling before Judge Lance M. Africk. The litigation is In Re: Taxotere (Docetaxel) Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2740).
