What’s the Problem?
August 18, 2016 – “Julie” (not her real name) decided to file the lawsuit because she has spent a large sum of money on hair treatments, none of which have been successful after she was treated with Taxotere.
The 50-year-old was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2013. She has no family history of the disease, exercises regularly and avoids alcohol. Unfortunately, she had a “false sense” of being healthy. “Even with a pea-sized lump, I thought this cannot be cancer, it’s not me,” Julie said.
Her husband found the tumor and she was diagnosed via ultrasound 10 days later. After discussing her options with a doctor, Julie decided to undergo a double mastectomy, a surgery in which both breasts are removed. The surgeon found a cancerous nodule in one of her lymph nodes, which requires chemotherapy to treat.
Julie underwent 6 rounds of chemo from August to December. She lost her hair after the 2nd round of treatment but it didn’t bother her, believing it would grow back. But only a little grew back, and only on the sides. Now she has “giant bald spots that you really notice when my hair is wet,” Jule says.
But she didn’t know Taxotere had been linked to permanent alopecia until she got a call from her best friend, who was also a breast cancer patient. She too went through chemotherapy but chose Adriamycin (Doxorubicin) and her hair grew back to normal. Julie now wishes she would have made the same choice.
