What’s the Problem?
Investigators are working with the hotel to determine where the legionella came from. However, preliminary evidence points to the hotel’s spa, as artificial water systems provide environments conducive to the growth and dissemination of the bacteria.
Management at the Crookston Inn has temporarily closed the spa and pool to guests. The hotel is notifying guests who visited between Jan. 14 and Feb. 13 to inform them they may have been exposed to Legionnaires, to watch closely for symptoms and consult a physician immediately should any appear.
MDH is asking healthcare providers in the Crookston area to watch for any additional patients with symptoms which may indicate Legionnaires’. The disease is a bacterial pneumonia that can be severe, so prompt diagnosis and antibiotic treatment is critical.
Signs and symptoms of Legionnaires include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, chills, shortness of breath, loss of appetite and coughing. The disease is spread by inhaling tiny water drops around sources which harbor Legionella bacteria.
Legionnaires cannot be spread from person to person, according to MDH. In 2018, Minnesota had more than 150 cases of the disease statewide.
