What’s the problem?
July 5, 2017 – Ohio prison officials say environmental tests have been done in hopes of finding the source of Legionnaires’ at the Franklin Medical Center in Columbus. The 2 cases of the disease caused the facility to cut off use of its tap water and install new faucets and filters, according to FOX 8.
The prison hospital houses nearly 600 inmates who require medical and long-term care. Last week, officials sent out an internal memo advising people not to drink the tap water.
A second update sent later last week says most of the faucets and showers are now safe to use after new filters were installed.
Legionella, the bacteria that cause Legionnaires’ disease, typically grow in closed water systems. People can contract the disease if they inhale mist or vapor from contaminated systems.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ include high fever, chills and coughing. The time between exposure to the bacteria and onset of symptoms is generally 2 to 10 days, but can take longer. Between 5 and 30% of those who contract Legionnaires’ die from the disease, according to the CDC.
