What’s the Problem?
June 12, 2017 – Health inspectors went to the affected LA Fitness locations on Kirkman Road in Orange County and on Orange Blossom Trail in Hunter’s Creek on Friday and found conditions that were favorable for legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. The outbreaks occurred at the Kirkman location in late May and the Hunter’s Creek location in either late February or late May, according to CBS News.
Showers and spas at both locations were neglected and in need of treatment with a hydrochlorinated solution, health officials said. Legionnaires’ can spread when people inhale contaminated water particles.
This new outbreak marks the 3rd Florida LA Fitness location found in recent months to have conditions favorable for Legionnaires’. In April, the Florida Department of Health confirmed 3 cases of the respiratory illness in people who had exercised at the location on Silver Star Road in Ocoee.
Back in 2010, Legionnaires’ was found at the LA Fitness on Michigan Street and Conway Road in 2008 and at the Waterford Lakes location.
News of the Florida cases comes on the heels of several other Legionnaires’ outbreaks reported across the U.S. Legionella was found in a New York City police station where an officer was hospitalized with the disease. Last week, the Southern Nevada Health District announced it was investigating at least two cases of Legionnaires’ in guests at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
