About NuWave Pressure Cookers

NuWave’s pressure cooker lineup includes the NutriPot Digital Pressure Cooker — available in 6-quart, 8-quart, and 13-quart configurations — and the Duet Electric Pressure Cooker and Air Fryer Combo. The NutriPot is marketed as a multi-function appliance with 11 to 12 one-touch presets including rice, soup, meat and stew, poultry, beans, steam, bake, and canning, featuring a non-stick dishwasher-safe inner pot, a Sure-Lock Safety System, and a push-button steam release. The 13-quart model runs at 1,800 watts with a hinged lid that locks and detaches for cleaning.

The Duet combines pressure cooking with air frying in a single 6-quart unit featuring three removable lids, an 18/10 stainless steel inner pot, an integrated digital temperature probe, dual NTC temperature sensors, and up to 450 cooking presets. NuWave describes the Duet as using “Magnetic Levitation Variable Pressure Boiling Technology” that makes over 200 pressure adjustments per cooking cycle to maintain continuous boiling. Both product lines are sold at Amazon, NuWave’s own website, and through authorized retailers nationwide.

How Pressure Cooker Injuries Occur

Electric pressure cookers operate by trapping steam inside a sealed vessel until pressure builds to levels that significantly raise the boiling point of water — cooking food faster but also storing a substantial amount of energy that must be safely released before the lid can be opened. When that energy release is not properly controlled, the consequences can be severe.

The most common pressure cooker injury mechanism is a lid-locking system failure that allows the lid to open — or be opened — while pressure remains inside the pot, causing hot contents to be forcefully ejected onto the user. Additional failure modes include blocked or malfunctioning pressure release valves that allow pressure to build beyond safe limits, defective sealing rings or gaskets that allow steam to escape unpredictably during cooking, and electronic control system failures that prevent the appliance from properly detecting or responding to pressure levels.

The Gap Between Marketing Claims and Real-World Risk

NuWave’s Sure-Lock Safety System is designed to prevent the lid from being removed while the cooker remains pressurized. Marketing a pressure cooker with specific safety system claims creates a consumer expectation that the product has been engineered to prevent lid-related injuries — and when that safety system fails to perform as marketed and a consumer is burned, that failure may form the basis of a product liability claim.

Safety certifications and proprietary safety technology do not make a pressure cooker immune from defects. Several electric pressure cooker models carrying safety certifications have been recalled in recent years after burn injuries were reported in the field — including the Best Buy Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cooker, recalled after 930,000 units were found to have incorrect volume markings that caused overfilling and burn injuries, and the Double Insight Gem 65 8-in-1 Multicooker, recalled after 104,000 units began overheating and melting during use.

Warning Signs of a Pressure Cooker Defect

Consumers who have noticed any of the following issues with their NuWave NutriPot, Duet, or any other pressure cooker should immediately stop using the appliance and document the problem with photographs before contacting the manufacturer. Warning signs that may indicate a defect include steam escaping from around the lid seal during pressurized cooking, the float valve failing to drop fully after the cooking cycle ends, the lid rotating or lifting before pressure has completely dissipated, error codes that are not resolved by standard troubleshooting, unusual odors or discoloration near the heating element or base, and any unexpected change in pressure or temperature during a normal cooking cycle.

Can I File a Lawsuit?

Consumers who were burned by a NuWave NutriPot or Duet pressure cooker — whether from a lid failure, steam ejection, unexpected pressure release, or any other defect — may have significant legal options against NuWave and the retailer that sold the product.
