On August 2, 2018, Rena Ware International Inc. of Bellevue, Washington announced a voluntary Fast Track Recall of the Nutrex Pressure Cooker Model 2153 in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. The pressure cookers were manufactured in South Korea and imported by Rena Ware International Inc. The company is contacting all known purchasers directly.
What Product Is Affected?
The recall covers the Nutrex Cooker™, Model 2153 — a silver pressure cooker with black handles and a blue gasket attached to the inside of the cover. To confirm whether a specific unit is recalled, consumers should check the bottom of the unit, where Model number 2153.DW, the month and year of production, and “Rena Ware” are stamped. Additionally, “DONG WON” is stamped on the base of the main valve on the lid, and “DWM” is stamped on the blue gasket.
The recalled pressure cookers were sold exclusively through Rena Ware sales representatives from December 2015 through June 2018 for between $750 and $820.
What Is the Hazard?
The recalled Nutrex pressure cookers can discharge steam at lower pressures than intended, posing a serious burn hazard to consumers. An unintended, premature pressure release expels scalding steam and potentially hot food or liquid before the user expects depressurization — leaving no time to move away from the cooker.
Incidents and Injuries
Rena Ware has received 13 reports of unintended depressurization involving the recalled pressure cookers. Five of those incidents resulted in burn injuries to consumers.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own the recalled Nutrex Pressure Cooker Model 2153 should stop using it immediately and contact Rena Ware to receive a free repair. Rena Ware is reaching out directly to all known purchasers, but consumers who have not been contacted should not wait.
