What’s the problem?
April 7, 2017 – The lawsuit (PDF) was filed last month on behalf of Diana Jane Picolla, who is alleging that Johnson & Johnson and its Ethicon subsidiary manufactured and sold a defective hernia mesh patch, which poses an unreasonable risk of severe adverse reactions among patients, including:
- Chronic pain
- Deformation of the mesh
- Adhesions to internal organs
- Other complications
Picolla had incisional hernia repair surgery in December 2010, at which time a 15cm by 20cm patch of Physiomesh Composite mesh was laparoscopically implanted in her body. However, the lawsuit indicates that the Physiomesh failed to work as intended, causing adverse health complications that ultimately required the mesh to be removed. Additionally, Picolla claims she needed at least two invasive surgeries due to the hernia repair complications.
“Neither Plaintiff Diana Jane Picolla nor her implanting physician were adequately warned or informed by Defendants of the defective and dangerous nature of Physiomesh,” the complaint states. “Moreover, neither Plaintiff Diana Jane Picolla nor her implanting physician were adequately warned or informed by Defendants of the risks associated with the Physiomesh or the frequency, severity or duration of such risks.”
The case joins a growing number of lawsuits filed in recent months, each involving similar allegations of problems with Physiomesh. Over the coming weeks and months, it is expected that Ethicon will face hundreds, if not thousands, of lawsuits across the U.S.
