What’s the Problem?
Plaintiff claims she underwent hernia repair surgery with Physiomesh in 2014, and subsequently developed complications including severe abdominal pain, diminished bowel motility and bowel obstructions.
She underwent a second surgery a year later to remove the hernia patch but doctors were unable to extract all of the mesh, leaving the material stuck in the woman’s bowels and abdominal walls.
The Physiomesh patch received by the plaintiff (Product Code PHY2025V) was withdrawn in May 2016 after an analysis of unpublished data found higher than average recurrence and reoperation rates following laparoscopic ventral hernia repair with the devices. Ethicon was unable to determine what was causing the problem, but speculated that it may be due to “product characteristics” and other factors.
Plaintiff claims that Physiomesh is defective and that she will likely suffer lifelong pain and other medical complications.
The complaint was filed on September 22, 2016, in the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida under case number 6:16-cv-01663-PGB-DAB.
