What’s the Problem?
January 16, 2017 – Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declares that vape use among teenagers “is now a major public health concern,” noting that the practice jumped “an astounding 900%” between 2011 and 2015. “These products are now the most commonly used form of tobacco among youth in the United States, surpassing conventional tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and hookahs,” says Murthy, who worries that e-cigarettes “could be an avenue by which kids are addicted to nicotine” and eventually start smoking.
The numbers cited in the report were taken from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), which found that the share of high school students who reported using e-cigarettes in the previous month jumped from 1.5% in 2011 to 16% in 2015—a whopping 967% increase.
“My concern is e-cigarettes have the potential to create a whole new generation of kids who are addicted to nicotine,” Murthy told the Associated Press. “If that leads to the use of other tobacco-related products, then we are going to be moving backward instead of forward.”
In order to “protect our nation’s young people from being harmed by these products,” Murthy recommends imposing rigid new policies on the electronic cigarette industry, such as higher taxes, vaping bans, limits on advertising, and possibly flavor restrictions.
