Over the past decade, FDA has received at least 35 reports of seizure in vape or e-cigarette users. Some of these reports were initially handled by poison control centers nationwide, others were fielded by the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS).
“While 35 cases may not seem like much compared to the total number of people using e-cigarettes, we are nonetheless concerned by these reported cases,” said FDA head Scott Gottlieb. “We also recognize that not all of the cases may be reported.”

What’s the Problem?
Due to the lack of a clear pattern among the stroke victims in these cases, FDA declined to state that e-cigs and vape devices were the cause. Some of the victims were young novices, while others were hardened veterans to the scene. Complicating matters further, several of the patients had a prior history of strokes, combined with other risk factors including drug use, according to the agency.
FDA also failed to specify any specific brand name vapes or vape juices implicated in the seizures, as this information wasn’t provided in all these cases (though it should be noted that some devices, in particular Juul, deliver higher doses of nicotine than most other e-cigs).
What is a Seizure?
A seizure is a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain, according to the epilepsy foundation. Seizures typically affect how a person appears or acts for a short time. Many different things can occur during a seizure, depending on the person. Whatever the brain and body can do normally can also occur during a seizure.
According to the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of a seizure may include:
- Temporary confusion
- A staring spell
- Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
- Loss of consciousness or awareness
- Psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety or deja vu
