What’s the problem?

December 1, 2015 – 34-year-old Monica O’Neill suffered extreme cramping and pain after being implanted with the Essure contraceptive in 2010, according to CBS affiliate WFMY News 2. O’Neill claims she initially wanted to have her tubes tied, but her doctor told her Essure was a ‘perfect alternative’ to tubal ligation. She now has to decide whether to have a hysterectomy due to complications allegedly caused by the device; she also wants to see Essure pulled off the U.S. market.

How Does Essure Work?

The Essure procedure involves permanently placing tiny metal coils into a woman’s fallopian tubes to protect against pregnancy. Over a period of about 3 months, scar tissue forms around the coils that keeps sperm from reaching the eggs and prevents conception. Essure was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002.

Essure Problems

Essure has been heavily criticized by women who were allegedly injured after receiving the implant. Additionally, FDA’s process for approving medical devices has come under scrutiny. Last month, U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced legislation that would force the agency to rescind its premarket approval of Essure and remove it from the market. Fitzpatrick also noted that the FDA has received more than 5,000 adverse event reports related to Essure since it was approved in 2002.
