Representative Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) has introduced a bill to congress that would force the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to take the Essure birth control implant off the market.

What’s the problem?
November 4, 2015 – Fitzpatrick introduced the so-called ‘E-Free Act’ today, the 13th anniversary of Essure receiving pre-market approval from the FDA. The congressman introduced the legislation after more than 5,000 women and doctors made complaints about the contraceptive.
Essure is a permanent sterilization procedure marketed as an alternative to tubal ligation (“tubes tied” surgery) that can be performed in 10 minutes at a doctor’s office. However, thousands of women around the country have reported severe pain, miscarriage and other injuries after being implanted with Essure. In some cases, the metal coils of the device, which are inserted directly into the fallopian tubes to permanently block sperm from reaching the egg, have migrated and pierced other organs.
To date, at least 5 deaths (3 late-term miscarriages and 2 patient deaths) have been linked to Essure. In September, several former users testified at a special FDA panel hearing, urging the agency to take the contraceptive off the market.
Darlene Taylor of Detroit attended the hearing to support Congressman Fitzpatrick’s E-Free Act.“I’m hoping that they will pull it off the market immediately to save future women,” she said. “The ones that are suffering now, many of them have become hopeless due to no insurance, the ability not to work anymore because of the sickness. They’re suffering as far as their families– being moms, just every day chores and situations are very difficult for them.”
