What’s the Problem?

March 23, 2017 – For the study, researchers looked at 13 peer-reviewed journal articles and found that combining energy drinks with alcoholic beverages increased your risk for falls, car accidents, fights and acts of violence. In some cases, the combo even led people to attempt suicide.
“The stimulant effects of caffeine mask the result that most people get when they drink,” says Audra Roemer, lead author of the study. “Usually when you’re drinking alcohol, you get tired and you go home. Energy drinks mask that, so people may underestimate how intoxicated they are, end up staying out later, consume more alcohol, and engage in risky behavior and more hazardous drinking practices.”
According to the study, the use of caffeinated alcoholic drinks is on the rise in North America — vodka mixed with Red Bull being the most popular combo.
Roemer says her study is the first in a series of three articles linking alcohol and energy drink consumption to an increased risk of injury whose goal it is determine if the practice is a serious public health concern. The researchers were not able to statistically determine the extent of risk and more research is needed to confirm the findings.
