March 23, 2019 – Health officials found Legionella in the water system at Christmas Mountain resort near Wisconsin Dells, according to WKOW. Workers are still trying to determine the source of the bacteria.
Legionella is naturally occurring in freshwater environments, including lakes and streams, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The bacteria can become a health threat when it spreads into human-made building water systems such as:
- Showerheads and sink faucets
- Cooling towers
- Hot tubs
- Decorative fountains / water features
- Hot water tanks and heaters
- Large plumbing systems
The Sauk County Health Department was notified of a patient who contracted Legionnaires in Nov. 2017, said Tara Hayes, director of the Sauk County Health Department. Authorities narrowed their investigation down to the Christmas Mountain Resort because the patient had recently been a guest there.
Legionella bacteria was collected at the facility after the report was issued, according to Hayes. Then in Oct. 2018, another patient who had also visited Christmas Mountain reported developing symptoms of Legionnaires.
The Sauk County Health Department mandated testing for Legionella following the October case. Authorities there mandated regular testing for the bacteria after the incident. Tests are still being conducted at the resort, but some areas have come back positive for Legionella.
The health department defines an outbreak as 2 or more people diagnosed with Legionnaires’ within 1 year at the same location, Hayes said. The Sauk County Health Department confirmed presence of Legionella on Monday.
