What’s the Problem?

According to an FDA Drug Safety Alert issued on January 27, 2017, teething tablets that contain belladonna pose an unnecessary risk to infants and children, and consumers should not purchase these products.
FDA contacted Hyland’s Teething Tablets manufacturer Standard Homeopathic Company about issuing a recall, but the company has not agreed to recall its products at this time.
Last November, FDA announced a recall for the following homeopathic teething tablet products after they were found to contain too much belladonna, “a substance that can cause harm at larger doses:”

  • CVS Homeopathic Infants’ Teething Tablet 135 tablets, UPC: 050428424162, Lots: 41116 and 43436.
  • Kids Relief Homeopathic Ear Relief Oral Liquid 0.85 fl. oz., UPC: 778159090639, Lot: 35254.
  • CVS Homeopathic Kids’ Ear Relief Liquid 0.85 fl. oz., UPC: 050428441633, Lot: 33149.

FDA launched an investigation into the safety of homeopathic teething tablets after at least 400 adverse events — including the deaths of 10 children — were linked to the products. “The relationship of these deaths to the homeopathic teething products has not yet been determined and is currently under review,” FDA said.
