Update: Hyland’s Teething Tablets Recalled in Australia
May 2, 2017 – Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has issued a recall for Hyland’s Baby Teething Tablets and Hyland’s Baby Nighttime Teething Tablets over concerns that inconsistent belladonna alkaloids may harm children. The recall does not include Hyland’s baby teething gel; however, all Hyland’s baby teething products, including the gel, will no longer be sold in Australia.
What’s the Problem?
April 14, 2017 – Standard Homeopathic issued the recall at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which conducted tests that determined the teething tablets contained inconsistent amounts of belladonna, an herb known colloquially as “deadly nightshade.”
Belladonna poses little health risk in its diluted form; however, from 2006 to 2016, FDA received hundreds of adverse event reports concerning infants who had been given the products. Some became delirious while others had to be rushed to the hospital after their legs and arms began twitching.
Following a September 2016 FDA warning , Hyland’s, a subsidiary of Standard Homeopathic, said that it would no longer manufacture or distribute the teething products.
However, the company maintained that the FDA had failed to demonstrate a scientific link between the teething tablets and infant seizures. The products remained on some store shelves for months, and were still available online.
FDA says any homeopathic teething tablets containing belladonna pose “an unnecessary risk” and urges consumers not to use them.
