Pharmaceutical Companies Sued Over Gastrointestinal Side Effects of Weight-Loss Drugs
A 44-year-old Louisiana woman has filed a defective drug lawsuit against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly and Co., the makers of Ozempic (Semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), alleging that the drugs can cause gastroparesis, according to The CUT [1.].
The lawsuit was entered on Aug. 2, 2023, in the Western District of Louisiana on behalf of Plaintiff Jaclyn Bjorklund, who claims she took both Ozempic and Mounjaro at the advice of her physician. In just over 1 year of being prescribed the drugs, Bjorklund began experiencing stomach problems so severe that she was hospitalized several times, and threw up so violently that she lost her teeth, the complaint states.
The lawsuit brings claims of failure to warn on the part of Novo and Lilly, and Bjorklund is seeking unspecified financial compensation. Hundreds of other claims alleging gastrointestinal injuries from these weight-loss drugs are currently being investigated across the country.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a brand name for semaglutide, a GLP-1 analogue that works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which is released in the gut in response to eating. The role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood sugar (glucose). Wegovy is manufactured and marketed by the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2021.
