What’s the Problem?

March 29, 2017 – According to the lawsuit, Plaintiff Lois Slemp developed ovarian cancer after decades of using Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower body powder for feminine hygiene purposes. Slemp’s cancer is now in stage III(c), and she has suffered a recurrence and metastasis to her liver. Her complaint has been moved forward as a result of her declining health.
Johnson & Johnson has been named as a defendant in more than 3,000 lawsuits alleging ovarian cancer from its baby powder and Shower-to-Shower. Plaintiffs claim that regular application of the products to the female genitals increases the risk of ovarian cancer.
The complaints cite numerous studies dating back to the early 1970s which have identified links between talcum powder and cancer, as well as internal documents from J&J which indicate that company officials were aware of the research. However, plaintiffs claim that the defendants chose to ignore the evidence in order to maximize profits.
Missouri’s 22nd Circuit Court is home to the largest talcum powder cancer litigation in the U.S. Over the past year, the jurisdiction has been the scene of 4 trials. To date, J&J has scored only one win, in a case that concluded earlier this month.
The other 3 trials ended with verdicts for plaintiffs, with the most recent case ending in October with a damage award of $70 million for a woman from California. In May, a South Dakota ovarian cancer survivor was awarded $55 million, while the family of an Alabama woman who died of the disease was awarded $72 million last February.
