What’s the Problem?
This CPSC Warning was issued on April 28, 2021, and involves numerous PTAC recalls, the most recent of which affects about 710 previously recalled units sold to consumers from May 2019 through December 2019. Earlier recalls include:
- Goodman-manufactured Amana, York International, Energy Knight, and Goodman-branded Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (PTAC) units refurbished and resold by PTAC Crew and PTAC USA : March 1, 2018 – Goodman company recalled about 534,000 PTACs after the company received at least 9 reports of PTACs catching on fire, including 1 report of smoke inhalation with medical attention. The recalled units are beige and the brand name is printed on most of the units’ control covers. Models that begin with the following prefixes are included in this recall: EKTC15, EKTH15, PMC15, PMH12, PMH15, PTC15, PTH12, PTH15, UCYB15 and UCYH15. The CPSC Recall Number for these units is 18-113.
- Bryant, Carrier and Fast-branded Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) and Packaged Terminal Heat Pump (PTHP) units refurbished and resold by PTAC Crew and PTAC USA : February 23, 2017 – Carrier Corporation recalled about 94,000 Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) and Packaged Terminal Heat Pumps (PTHP) after the company received at least 14 reports of overheating. The recalled units were sold under the Bryant, Carrier and Fast brand names, and have capacities of 7,000; 9,000; 12,000 and 15,000 BTUs and plug into 208/230 volt outlets. The CPSC Recall Number for these items is 17-094.
- Goodman-manufactured Amana, Century, Comfort-Aire, and Goodman branded PTAC and RAC units and York International-branded PTAC units refurbished and resold by PTAC Crew and PTAC USA : February 17, 2016 – Goodman Company recalled about 5,300 Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pumps (PTAC) and Room Air Conditioners (RAC) after the company received at least 10 reports of PTACs catching on fire, including 4 involving property damage. The recalled units are beige and have serial numbers ranging from 0701009633 through 0804272329. The CPSC Recall Number for these units is 16-102.
- GE Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) and Heating units refurbished and resold by PTAC Crew and PTAC USA : November 3, 2015 – GE Appliances recalled about 33,500 GE Zoneline® Air Conditioners and Heating Units after the company received at least 3 reports involving smoke and/or fire associated with the unit’s heater resulting in about $30,000 of property damage. These units were most often used in hotels, apartment buildings and commercial spaces. The CPSC Recall Number for these items is 16-025.
- Goodman-manufactured Amana, Century, Comfort-Aire, Goodman and York International-branded Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (PTAC) units refurbished and resold by PTAC Crew and PTAC USA : August 17, 2014 – Goodman Company recalled about 233,500 Amana, Century, Comfort-Aire, Goodman and York International Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (“PTAC”) units after the company received at least 5 reports of power cords smoking or catching on fire. The units are rated 230/208 volt, 3.5 kW and were most often installed in walls of hotels, motels, apartment buildings and commercial spaces to provide room climate control. The CPSC Recall Number for these items is 14-263.
Consumers who purchased a recalled PTAC unit should stop using it immediately and contact the recalling firms for more information about how to obtain a refund or replacement unit.
