What’s the problem?
The complaint (PDF) was filed on Dec. 14, 2015, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee by Wardell Fleming, who claims Invokana caused him to suffer kidney damage and reduced kidney function, ultimately leading to full-blown kidney failure.
According to allegations raised in the complaint, Fleming started taking Invokana to treat his type 2 diabetes in Nov. 2013, and shortly thereafter began developing kidney problems. Fleming also claims he is now at an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and other serious side effects as a result his use of the drug.
“SGLT2 inhibitors, including Invokana, are designed to inhibit renal glucose reabsorption with the goal of lowering blood glucose,” the complaint alleges. “As a result, excess glucose is not metabolized, but instead is excreted through the kidneys of a population of consumers already at risk for kidney disease.”
Fleming’s lawsuit joins a growing number of similar complaints filed in recent months alleging the manufacturers withheld important safety data regarding the potential health risks associated with using Invokana.
