What’s the Problem?

August 29, 2016 – According to the lawsuit (PDF), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) failed to disclose the potential environmental impact and societal costs of fracking for oil and gas on public lands. Plaintiffs demand that the BLM perform comprehensive environmental impact analyses, as required per the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), before leasing rights to drill.
The complaint, which is backed by the medical and public health group Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), targets 397 Obama administration leases that cover nearly 380,000 acres of public lands in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. PSR said it may eventually broaden the suit to include property in Montana, New Mexico and other U.S. states.
Leases give companies rights to drill and frack. Over the past few years, public land in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico has been leased for industrial development.
“Americans want and expect their public lands to be managed to protect pristine air and crystal-clear water, not creating smog alerts and fracking waste spills,” said PSR director Dr. Catherine Thomasson. “The health impacts from climate change, from extreme weather events to lethal heat waves, make it clear we must draw the line. We can’t allow this drilling. Its climate health impacts are far too great.”
The Obama administration has sold leases granting access to approximately 10 million acres of public land for as little as $2 per acre, and environmentalists argue that nearly 10% of U.S. energy-related pollution is caused by extraction of oil and gas from public lands.
