What’s the Problem?
September 11, 2017 – Preliminary air samples from the Manchester district of Houston showed concentrations of up to 324 parts per billion of benzene, above the level at which federal safety officials recommend special breathing equipment for workers, according to The New York Times.
Officials also detected high levels of volatile organic compounds, which have been associated with severe health problems, including liver damage and cancer.
Monitoring for the toxins will continue into the foreseeable future, depending on subsequent readings and weather conditions, according to Loren Raun, chief environmental science officer for the Houston Health Department.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it was also concentrating on “an area of potential concern” linked to benzene emissions from a Valero facility. EPA air monitoring buses would continue to test pollution levels around the Valero plant and others in the area as they start back up, according to an agency spokesman.
Manchester, a low-income residential area contained by 2 freeways, a shipping lane and the Valero refinery, has a history of bearing the brunt of industrial pollution. Studies have detected abnormally high levels of childhood leukemia in several areas in Houston, including Manchester, complications blamed on high levels of chemicals in the air.
