What’s the Problem?
December 22, 2017 – Anadarko Petroleum Corporation discovered the contaminated groundwater and soil while trying to excavate an old pump earlier this month, according to the Denver Post. The company was forced to remove 200 barrels of tainted groundwater, and lab tests found benzene 900 times the amount legally allowed by the state of Colorado.
According to a self-reported analysis, the company also removed nearly 10,000 cubic feet of polluted soil, enough to fill nearly 400 hot tubs.
A spokeswoman for Anadarko said the company is removing a tank battery at the site, which is how they discovered the contaminated groundwater, something both the operator and COGCC said is not uncommon during this kind of work.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that benzene — an organic compound found in oil, gasoline, plastics, and hundreds of other everyday household items — can increase the risk for the following types of cancer:
- Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML)
- Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)
- Aplastic Anemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)
- Acute Lymphocytic (or Lymphoblastic) Leukemia (ALL)
- Chronic Myeloid (or Myelogenous) Leukemia (CML)
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL)
- Bladder Cancer
Companies are required to protect workers from unsafe benzene exposure. However, many workers report unsafe working conditions and a lack of protective gear, especially in occupations involving the railroad, oil refineries, and gas stations where benzene is prevalent.
The big question that remains is are the nearby water wells safe? COGCC said it is still conducting tests to determine the answer, but said these types of releases usually don’t go beyond the immediate area.
Anadarko also said they believe the site has been contained, and the company will continue working with COGCC to restore the affected area.
