Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Diagnosed in Farmers, Landscapers Exposed to Roundup
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a medical term used to describe a group of cancers which attack the lymphatic system. Also known as NHL or non-Hodgkins disease, the condition includes a number of different subtypes of lymphoma, with varying degrees of aggressiveness. One of the rarest and most aggressive forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma linked to Roundup is primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma.
What is Primary CNS Lymphoma?
Primary central nervous system lymphoma occurs when malignant cells form in the lymph tissue of the brain and/or spinal cord. Because the eye is so close to the brain, primary CNS lymphoma may also start in the eye (called ocular lymphoma). The cancer can also involve spinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord. This is called leptomeningeal lymphoma.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms of primary CNS lymphoma include:
- Changes in speech or vision
- Fever
- Headache
- Unexplained weight loss
- Seizures
- Changes in personality
- Numbness to extreme temperatures
- Paralysis on one side of the body
Lymphoma Cancer Treatment
High-dose chemotherapy combined with autologous stem cell transplantation has been found to be highly effective for the treatment of early stage primary CNS lymphoma. Treatment works best when the tumor has not spread outside the brain and the patient is under the age of 60, able to carry out most daily activities, and does not have HIV/AIDS or other diseases that weaken the immune system.
Prognosis and Life Expectancy
Without treatment, patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma survive for less than 2 months. Patients who are treated with chemotherapy often survive 3 to 4 years or more, depending on whether the tumor stays in remission. Survival may improve with autologous stem cell transplant.
Primary CNS Lymphoma Complications
Possible complications of primary CNS lymphoma include:
- Chemotherapy side effects, including low blood counts
- Radiation side effects including confusion, headaches, nervous system problems, and tissue death
- Return (recurrence) of the lymphoma
