Roundup Risks

According to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC), Roundup works by inhibiting the function of an enzyme called EPSP synthase, which causes broadleaf plants and grasses to die. Since nearly all forms of vegetation require EPSP synthase to produce the proteins they need to grow, Roundup is a highly effective broad spectrum herbicide. However, this same mechanism of action may also increase the risk of cancers such as large diffuse B-cell lymphoma in humans.

What is Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma?

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, that occurs when the body makes abnormal B-lymphocytes, white blood cells that fight infection. In some cases lymphoma cells begin in other parts of the body. This is referred to as “extranodal disease.”

Symptoms

The most common symptom of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is a painless swelling in the neck, armpit or groin. Other symptoms may include:

  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats
  • Fever

Treatment

Treatment for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma depends on the stage of the cancer and extent of the disease in the body. Most patients are treated with chemotherapy, usually with a regimen of 4 drugs known as CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone), plus the monoclonal antibody rituximab (Rituxan). CHOP is most often given in cycles 3 weeks apart.

Prognosis and Survival Rate

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is a fast-growing, extremely aggressive form of cancer. The disease is fatal if left untreated; however, with timely and appropriate treatment, approximately 70% of all patients can be cured.

Roundup Cancer Lawsuit Status

At least 37 lawsuits in 21 district courts have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2741) in the Northern District of California before U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria. These lawsuits have been filed by farmers, agricultural workers, landscapers, and private homeowners who allegedly developed cancer after using or being exposed to Roundup. The complaints allege that Monsanto knew or should have known that exposure to glyphosate may increase the risk of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and other types of cancer.
