What’s the Problem?
Aetna’s new plan will become effective May 15, 2015, according to company spokeswoman Cynthia Michener. The policy will no longer cover the use of power morcellators, which are used during fibroid removal and hysterectomy surgery, in most cases.
Morcellator Cancer FDA Warning
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned in April 2014 that about 1 in 350 women who require fibroid surgery have an undetected type of cancer called sarcoma, a rate much higher than previously suspected. In November 2014, FDA updated the warning, saying morcellators should not be used under most circumstances. The agency also suggested that manufacturers include a “black box” warning with morcellators describing the potential complications associated with the devices.
Once the new policy takes effects, Aetna will require doctors to obtain prior approval for any procedure in which a morcellator will be used, according to the Wall Street Journal. The devices may still be used in rare cases when women want to preserve fertility and have no other options, or when another type of procedure could lead to health problems.
“The policy takes into account the latest FDA warnings about the risk that morcellation can spread unsuspected uterine sarcoma in the abdomen and pelvis,” Michener said.
Aetna has advised doctors to talk to patients about the potential risks and benefits of power morcellation, as well as alternative courses of treatment.
