What’s the Problem?

Over the past 40+ years, there have been dozens of studies which have found links between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, but manufacturers have continually refused to switch to safer alternatives. Many consumer advocates have requested for manufacturers to place warning labels on their products to let consumers know about this potential risk, but these companies have so far refused to do so.

Talc Cancer Studies

The first study to suggest that talcum powder may cause ovarian cancer was published in 1971 in The Lancet. For the study, researchers discovered that most ovarian tumors had talc particles “deeply embedded” in them.

In 1982, a study published in the journal Cancer found that women using talcum powder during ovulation were at a 92% increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Over the next 30 years, another 21 studies were performed on talc powder, and almost all of these studies found that women who applied these products around their genitals were at an increased risk for developing ovarian cancer.

How Can I Tell if Talc Caused my Ovarian Cancer?

In most cases, doctors who provide ovarian cancer treatment focus on fighting the disease rather than identifying its cause. However, the same tissue samples and pathology reports that are used to diagnose the cancer can be examined to determine whether your ovarian tissues contain talc fibers. By reviewing your medical records and sending your pathology reports to an expert, we can determine whether talc may have caused your ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

  • Abdominal bloating, indigestion or nausea
  • Changes in appetite
  • Feelings of pressure in the pelvis or lower back
  • Needing to urinate more frequently
  • Changes in bowel movements
  • Increased abdominal girth
  • Feeling tired or low energy

Class Action Lawsuit Information

There have been several class action lawsuits filed against the manufacturers of talcum powder products; however, women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer may want to consider filing their own individual lawsuits.

The big difference is that with the individual suits women can seek compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and lost wages, among other things, but those who are part of the class action are suing for only recovery of the cost of the product, regardless of the existence of a cancer diagnosis.
