On May 29, 2026, Champion Foods LLC of New Boston, Michigan announced a voluntary recall of certain batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread. The FDA published the recall announcement on June 1, 2026 [1]. No illnesses or injuries related to the recalled products have been reported to date, and routine testing of the seasoning batches prior to use tested negative for Salmonella. The company is acting out of an abundance of caution.

What Products Are Affected?

The recall covers two Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread products sold in single and 2-pack formats with specific Sell By dates. Consumers should check the Sell By date printed in black inside the cheese bread image on the front of the package to determine whether their product is included in the recall.

The affected products and their identifying information are:

  • Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread Single Pack (UPC: 8 70375 00511 1) – Sell By dates: 2/4/2027, 2/5/2027, 2/23/2027, 2/24/2027, 3/9/2027, 3/10/2027, 3/17/2027, 3/18/2027, 3/24/2027, 3/25/2027, 4/7/2027, 4/8/2027, 4/20/2027, and 4/21/2027

The recalled products were distributed and sold nationwide at major retailers including Costco, Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, Meijer, Jewel, Schnucks, Grocery Outlet, Giant Landover, Food City, Hy-Vee, and others.

What Is the Hazard?

The recalled cheese bread has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of severe illness.

Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and lead to more serious conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

What Caused the Recall?

The recall stems from a separate voluntary recall issued by California Dairies, Inc. involving milk powder with potential Salmonella contamination. That milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer that produces the seasoning blend used in Motor City Pizza Co.’s 5 cheese sauce blend, which is incorporated into the recalled cheese bread.

Incidents and Injuries

No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread to date.
