On August 6, 2026, Louisville Ladder, Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky announced a voluntary recall of attic stairway ladders with gas struts in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. Approximately 1,770,000 units are affected in the United States, along with approximately 13,054 units sold in Canada. The ladders were manufactured in Mexico and imported by Louisville Ladder, Inc.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers aluminum and wood frame attic stairway ladders with gas struts only, sold under four brand names: Louisville, Featherlite, Lite, and Century. The ladders come with handrails and fold into the attic, and were sold in various frame sizes to accommodate different ceiling heights and attic opening dimensions:
- Frame widths: 22.5, 25.5, and 30.0 inches
- Frame lengths: 54 and 60 inches
- Ceiling height ranges: 7 feet 8 inches up to 12 feet
The brand name and model number are located on the inside of the attic door. The recalled ladders were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Do It Best, Orgill, and other retailers nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com from November 2012 through July 2026 for between $170 and $600.
What Is the Hazard?
The spreader bolts on the recalled attic stairway ladders can break while the ladder is in use, causing the ladder to suddenly collapse or fail beneath the user. A fall from an attic ladder — which may be deployed at heights ranging from nearly 8 feet to 12 feet above the floor — can result in serious injury or death.
Incidents and Injuries
Louisville Ladder has received 11 reports of a bolt breaking on the recalled ladders. One of those incidents resulted in a consumer suffering injuries to the neck, head, and back.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own a recalled Louisville, Featherlite, Lite, or Century attic stairway ladder with gas struts should stop using it immediately. To receive a free repair kit containing two replacement ¼-inch spreader bolts, washers, lock nuts, and installation instructions, consumers should register at Atticstairwayrecall.expertinquiry.com — the ladder’s model number, found on the inside of the attic door, will be required during registration.
