On August 6, 2026, Louisville Ladder, Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky announced a voluntary recall of attic stairway ladders with gas struts — including those sold under the Featherlite brand name — in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. The recall also covers attic ladders sold under the Louisville, Lite, and Century brand names. Approximately 1,770,000 units are affected nationwide.
How to Identify a Recalled Featherlite Ladder
The recall covers Featherlite attic stairway ladders with gas struts only — not all Featherlite ladder products are included. Affected units are aluminum or wood frame ladders with handrails that fold into the attic, sold in frame widths of 22.5, 25.5, and 30.0 inches, frame lengths of 54 and 60 inches, and for ceiling heights ranging from 7 feet 8 inches up to 12 feet.
The Featherlite brand name and model number are printed on a label on the inside of the attic door — this is the primary way to confirm whether a specific unit is included in the recall. The recalled ladders were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Do It Best, Orgill, and other retailers nationwide and online at Amazon.com from November 2012 through July 2026 for between $170 and $600.
What Is the Hazard?
The spreader bolts that brace the ladder frame when the ladder is deployed can fracture and break during normal use — without warning. When a bolt breaks on an attic ladder, the structural integrity of the ladder is immediately compromised, potentially causing the user to fall from a height of up to 12 feet onto the floor below.
Incidents and Injuries
Louisville Ladder has received 11 reports of bolts breaking across all recalled ladder brands. One consumer suffered injuries to the neck, head, and back as a result of a bolt failure.

Homeowners who own a recalled Featherlite attic stairway ladder with gas struts should stop using it immediately and not allow anyone to use it until the free repair has been completed.
