What’s the Problem?
January 3, 2018 – Tikiya Phillips says that she and her husband gave their youngest daughter the hoverboard on Christmas night, and that everyone in the family took turns riding it before they went out for dinner, according to WITI Fox News 6.
“‘OK, now ya’ll put it back in the box before we left out of the house,” Tikiya told her kids. “Don’t forget to put the plastic back on there.'”
About an hour later she got an urgent call to come back home.
“As soon as I pulled up and see that her room window was out, that’s how I knew it was my home,” Tikiya said.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in November issued a second recall for hoverboards over concerns the devices could catch fire and/or explode.
The recall affected about 13,900 hoverboards, bringing the total number recalled since July 2016 to 520,100. The agency said the risk lies with the hoverboards’ battery packs, which are often made cheaply and can overheat, causing smoke, fire, and explosions that cause burns and property damage.
Phillips said she wants to warn other parents not to make the mistake she did.
“I advise them not to buy the hoverboard,” Tikiya said. “Like, it just happened to us on Christmas Day. We lost everything. We gotta start from scratch.”
