December 9, 2017 – The defendant in the Massage Envy lawsuits is Habtamu Gebreselassie of Silver Spring, Maryland, according to KNBC 4 Los Angeles.
Gebreselassie has been accused by at least 4 women of sexual misconduct at 3 different spas: A Massage Envy in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Washington D.C., another in Bowie, Maryland, and at an unaffiliated massage parlor on the 2000 block of P Street NW in D.C. He has only been charged in the incidents that allegedly occurred at the Tenleytown location.
One woman claims Gebreselassie touched her inappropriately at a Massage Envy in Bowie, Maryland, on June 20. She said the owner of the franchise offered her a free spa day and told her Gebreselassie had been transferred to another location in Washington, D.C.
Another woman claims Gebreselassie harassed her at a Massage Envy spa in Tenleytown, a neighborhood in Washington, D.C., on August 28.
“I’ve never done this before,” the 66-year-old woman claims Gebreselassie said. “I don’t know what got into me.”
Massage Envy is currently named as a defendant in nearly 200 similar lawsuits across the U.S. The company trains franchise owners to conduct internal investigations on reports of misconduct and does not require that they report alleged crimes to police, according to a BuzzFeed News Report published on Nov. 26.
