Recall Details and Affected Products

The recalled products are:

  • PNW Components Loam Pedal Gen 2 aluminum alloy mountain bike pedals – platform style (non-clip) pedals identifiable by a “Tectonic” logo laser etched onto the pedal body on the left corner, on the same side as the threaded axle; available in black, silver, green, orange, and purple.

Sold at independent bicycle dealers and online at PNWComponents.com, REI.com, Backcountry.com, and JensonUSA.com from June 2025 through November 2025 for about $160 per pair. The pedal axle can crack, causing the pedal to detach from the crank, posing a fall hazard to the rider. These pedals were sold after market through online retailers and bicycle shops.

PNW Components, Inc. of Seattle, Washington recalled approximately 1,200 Loam Pedal Gen 2 aluminum alloy bicycle pedals on January 8, 2026 (CPSC Recall No. 26-180) [1]. The products were manufactured in Taiwan. This is a Fast Track Recall, indicating expedited processing due to the severity of the hazard.

Consumers should immediately stop using the Loam Pedal Gen 2 and contact PNW Components to receive free replacement axles once they become available. In the interim, PNW Components is providing consumers with the Range Pedal, free of charge. PNW Components will follow up with consumers regarding the replacement axle system, which was estimated to begin shipping out to customers on January 5, 2026.

Potential for a Loam Pedals Recall Class Action Lawsuit

Consumers who purchased or were injured by Loam Pedal Gen 2 pedals may join a class action lawsuit. Claims could include:

  • The pedal axles were defectively designed and prone to cracking.
  • The pedals could detach from the crank during use, creating crash hazards.
  • Riders faced fall hazards from sudden pedal failure.
  • The company failed to adequately test the pedal axle strength before distribution.
  • Consumers purchased defective bicycle pedals that could not be safely used.
  • Riders suffered injuries from falls caused by pedal detachment.
  • The defect posed serious safety risks during mountain biking activities.
  • Cyclists lost control of their bicycles due to pedal axle failure.
  • The company received four reports of pedal axle cracking and detachment before issuing the recall.
  • Consumers paid approximately $160 per pair for defective pedals.

You could get compensation for medical expenses, emergency room treatment, hospitalization for crash injuries, surgery costs, physical therapy, lost wages, bicycle damage, product replacement costs, pain and suffering from injuries, and other crash-related expenses. While no injuries have been reported to date according to the recall announcement, consumers who experienced pedal failures or suffered injuries from crashes caused by the defective axles may be entitled to significant compensation.

Reported Incidents

According to the CPSC recall announcement, PNW Components has received four reports of the pedal axle cracking and detaching from the crank. No injuries have been reported as of January 8, 2026.

However, the potential for serious injury is significant. When a bicycle pedal detaches from the crank during riding, the cyclist can suddenly lose the ability to maintain balance and control. This is particularly dangerous during mountain biking, where riders often navigate challenging terrain, steep descents, and technical obstacles at high speeds.

Identifying Recalled Loam Pedal Gen 2

The recalled Loam Pedal Gen 2 can be identified by the following characteristics:

Logo Identification: The pedals feature a “Tectonic” logo that is laser etched onto the pedal body on the left corner, on the same side as the threaded axle. This logo is the primary identifying feature of the recalled product.

Pedal Type: These are platform style (non-clip) mountain bike pedals made of aluminum alloy. Platform pedals do not require special cycling shoes and allow riders to wear regular footwear.

Available Colors: The recalled pedals were sold in five color options:

  • Black
  • Silver
  • Green
  • Orange
  • Purple

Generation: This recall specifically affects the Gen 2 (Generation 2) model of the Loam Pedal. Earlier generations of Loam Pedals are not included in this recall.

Remedy and Replacement Program

PNW Components is providing a two-phase remedy for affected consumers:

Phase 1 – Interim Replacement: Consumers who contact PNW Components will receive the Range Pedal, free of charge, as an immediate replacement. This allows cyclists to continue riding safely while permanent repairs are developed.

Phase 2 – Permanent Repair: PNW Components is developing replacement axles for the Loam Pedal Gen 2. According to the recall notice, these replacement axles were estimated to begin shipping to customers on January 5, 2026. PNW Components will follow up directly with registered consumers regarding the availability and installation of the replacement axle system.

Fast Track Recall Designation

This recall has been designated as a “Fast Track Recall” by the CPSC, indicating that it meets specific criteria for expedited processing. Fast Track Recalls are typically issued when:

  • The hazard poses a significant risk of injury or death
  • The recall involves a relatively straightforward remedy
  • The company is committed to swift corrective action
  • Rapid consumer notification is essential to prevent injuries

The Fast Track designation underscores the seriousness of the safety defect and the need for immediate consumer action.

Federal Law Prohibits Sale of Recalled Products

Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC. This prohibition applies to:

  • Online marketplaces such as eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Poshmark
  • Bicycle shops and sporting goods stores
  • Garage sales and yard sales
  • Consignment shops and secondhand stores
  • Private sales between individuals
  • Donations to charities or individuals

Anyone who possesses recalled Loam Pedal Gen 2 pedals should not attempt to sell or transfer them to others. Instead, they should participate in the recall remedy program offered by PNW Components.

Mountain Biking Safety Considerations

Mountain biking inherently involves navigating challenging terrain, and equipment reliability is critical to rider safety. Pedals are fundamental components that cyclists depend on for power transfer, balance, and control. A pedal failure can have catastrophic consequences, particularly in the following scenarios:

Technical Descents: During steep downhill sections, riders rely on pedals to maintain control and modulate speed. A pedal detachment on a descent could result in serious crashes.

Uphill Climbs: When climbing steep terrain, riders apply significant force to the pedals. A sudden axle crack during a climb could cause the rider to lose balance and fall backward.

Jumps and Drops: Mountain bikers performing jumps or navigating drops need secure pedal contact for landing safely. Pedal failure during aerial maneuvers could lead to severe injuries.

High-Speed Sections: On fast trail sections, a sudden pedal detachment could cause the rider to lose control at high speeds, potentially resulting in serious crashes.

Consumer Rights and Product Liability

Consumers who purchased defective Loam Pedal Gen 2 pedals have legal rights under product liability law. Manufacturers have a duty to:

  • Design products that are safe for their intended use
  • Test products adequately before bringing them to market
  • Monitor product performance and investigate complaints
  • Issue timely recalls when safety defects are identified
  • Provide effective remedies to consumers affected by defects

When a product fails to meet these standards and causes injury or financial harm, consumers may have grounds for legal action to recover damages.
