On January 4, 2024, HoMedics of Commerce Township, Michigan announced a voluntary recall of its HoMedics Therapist Select Percussion Massager in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) [1]. Approximately 46,000 units are affected in the United States, along with approximately 41,000 additional units sold in Canada.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers the HoMedics Therapist Select Percussion Personal Massager, Model No. HHP-715. The product is black with a handle, housing, and a massage head attached to the end, and comes with four interchangeable massage heads. “HoMedics” is printed on the side of the barrel. The massager uses a 120 VAC, 60 HZ power cord for charging.
Only units manufactured through the end of 2022 are included in the recall. To determine whether a massager is affected, consumers should check the date code on a sticker located on the underside of the product’s barrel. The date code is a four-digit number in WWYY format, where WW is the sequential week of the year and YY represents the last two digits of the manufacturing year. Only units with a YY of 20, 21, or 22 are subject to this recall.
The recalled massagers were sold at Macy’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Lowe’s, JCPenney, The Home Depot, and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Homedics.com, Macys.com, BJs.com, Lowes.com, HomeDepot.com, and Amazon.com from September 2020 through November 2023 for approximately $100. The massagers were manufactured in China.
What Is the Hazard?
The recalled HoMedics massagers can overheat while being charged, posing a risk of fire and burns to consumers. An overheating rechargeable device left unattended during charging presents a particularly dangerous situation, as it can ignite nearby materials or cause burns if the consumer is in contact with the device when it overheats.
Incidents and Injuries
HoMedics has received 17 reports of the massagers overheating during charging. One of those incidents resulted in a burn injury to a consumer’s thumb.
What Caused the Recall?
The recall was initiated after the company identified that a defect in the massager’s charging system can cause the device to overheat. The defect affects units produced during manufacturing years 2020, 2021, and 2022, as identified by the date code on the underside of the barrel. The massagers were manufactured in China and distributed by FKA Distributing Co. LLC, dba HoMedics, of Commerce Township, Michigan.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own the recalled HoMedics Therapist Select Percussion Massager should immediately stop using or charging the device. Consumers may contact HoMedics for instructions on how to receive a full refund, or alternatively, a store credit toward any HoMedics product equal to the original purchase price plus an additional 50% credit.
Consumers may reach HoMedics at 800-466-3342, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET, or online at recall.homedics.com/HHP-715. Additional information is available at www.homedics.com by clicking on “Recall Information” at the bottom of the page.
