On May 7, 2026, Legacy Snack Solutions of Waukesha, Wisconsin announced a voluntary recall of certain batches of Giant Eagle Baked Pita Chips with Parmesan, Garlic & Herb. The FDA published the recall announcement on May 8, 2026 [1]. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall to date.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall covers Giant Eagle Baked Pita Chips with Parmesan, Garlic & Herb sold in 7.33 oz black bags with the Giant Eagle logo. The affected product can be identified by the following information printed on the back of the bag:
- UPC: 0 3003496507 5
- Best If Used By Date: 07/16/26
The recalled product was sold exclusively at Giant Eagle and Market District store locations across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, and Indiana, in the snack aisle.
What Is the Hazard?
The recalled pita chips have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of severe illness.
Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and lead to more serious conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
What Caused the Recall?
The recall stems from a voluntary recall issued by California Dairies, Inc. involving milk powder with potential Salmonella contamination. That milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer of a seasoning blend, which was then applied to the surface of the Giant Eagle Baked Pita Chips with Parmesan, Garlic & Herb.
Notably, routine testing of the seasoning batches prior to use in production came back negative for Salmonella. However, Legacy Snack Solutions is recalling the affected product out of an abundance of caution and is working closely with the FDA throughout the process.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who purchased the recalled Giant Eagle Baked Pita Chips with Parmesan, Garlic & Herb are urged not to consume the product. To receive a full refund or replacement, consumers should photograph the product’s bar code panel and Best If Used By date, then dispose of the product. Consumers may return to the store of purchase with their receipt or call the Legacy Snack Solutions customer care line, available 24/7 at 1-800-532-6120, to request a credit.
