What is the Zimmer Personalized Knee System?
Approved in 2012 via the FDA’s 510(k) loophole, the Persona Personalized Knee System (Zimmer Persona Knee) comes “as close as possible to the remarkable mechanics of the human body,” according to Zimmer, who claims the devices were the “most anatomically accurate knee implants” ever manufactured. Zimmer also said that the metal components and advanced materials in the Persona Knee provided “unrivaled” performance and longevity.
Zimmer Persona Recall
In March 2015, Zimmer issued a Class II recall for the Trabecular Metal Tibial Plate, a component of the Zimmer Persona knee system. According to the FDA recall notice, Zimmer had received about 6 complaints per 1,000 devices implanted, which was higher than expected. About 36% of the complaints involved loosening of the device and/or symptomatic problems that had to be fixed with revision surgery. Affected implants were sold throughout the U.S., including to more than a dozen Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals, from Nov. 2012 thru Jan. 2015.
Knee Replacement Complications
According to the FDA, problems with Zimmer Persona knee implants are caused by poor seating and/or fixation, which can cause the following complications in knee replacement patients:
- Knee Pain
- Knee Replacement Loosening
- Lack of Artificial Knee Fixation
- Device Failure
- Need for Revision Surgery
Can I Participate in a Class Action?
