What’s the Problem?
July 18, 2017 – Xarelto was linked last year to more adverse event reports than any other blood-thinner medication, implicated in more than 68% (15,043) of cases associated with the entire class of drugs, according to QuarterWatch (PDF).
Xarelto was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2011. Bayer and J&J marketed the drug as being superior to warfarin, a staple blood-thinner that’s been in use for more than 50 years in the U.S. However, ISMP noted that warfarin was associated with just 1,074 adverse event reports last year, a small fraction of the injuries Xarelto was linked to.
As a result of the mounting litigation filed over Xarelto bleeding side effects, all federal lawsuits have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2592) in the Eastern District of Louisiana. More than 17,000 claims are currently pending in the MDL, which is being overseen by U.S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon.
The complaints similarly allege that Bayer and J&J wrongly marketed Xarelto as superior to warfarin, an older-generation blood-thinner that’s been widely used with great effectiveness over the past 50 years. Additionally, Plaintiffs note that there is no antidote to reverse bleeding with Xarelto, whereas with warfarin, these events can be counteracted with a single dose of vitamin K.
