What is Viread?

Viread (generic: tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is an antiviral medication designed to prevent the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or hepatitis B from multiplying in the body. Tenofovir, the active ingredient in Viread, works by blocking the action of viral DNA polymerase, an enzyme that replicates the genetic material (DNA) of a virus. In doing this, Viread stops the viruses ability to spread and grow stronger.

What’s the problem?

Gilead manufactures several anti-HIV medications that contain tenofovir, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that works by preventing the HIV virus from replicating. These medications help support the immune system and prevent transmission of HIV. Patients claim that Gilead is failing to adequately warn patients about severe side effects. They also claim the drugmaker could release a safer drug.

Can I File a Class Action Lawsuit?

Our lawyers have opted against the filing of a class action lawsuit in the litigation involving Viread and the other HIV drugs in its class. It has been our experience that class actions typically render many plaintiffs powerless over their own cases, many of whom end up making bad decisions on behalf of the entire class, rather than on what’s best for them and their loved ones. For this reason, the law offices of Schmidt & Clark, LLP, are only filing individual claims for our clients. Contact us today to learn more about your legal rights.
