DR Power Equipment, distributed by DR Power LLP of South Burlington, Vermont, recalled approximately 60,250 leaf vacuums on January 8, 2026 (CPSC Recall No. 26-166) [1]. An additional 1,023 units were sold in Canada. This reannouncement and expansion follows the original May 2024 recall of 57,200 leaf blowers and vacuums. Sold at independent power equipment stores nationwide and online at drpower.com from September 2014 through June 2025 for between $1,300 and $4,000. Manufactured by Generac Power Systems Inc. of Waukesha, Wisconsin in the United States. This is a Fast Track Recall.

“DR” is printed on the motor housing. Model numbers are located on the front right side of walk-behind units behind the wheel, and on the impeller housing beside the engine on tow-behind units.

Health Risks

  • Severe lacerations from ejected material.
  • Eye injuries from flying debris.
  • Facial lacerations from high-velocity projectiles.
  • Traumatic injuries to hands and arms.
  • Deep cuts requiring surgical repair.
  • Permanent scarring from laceration injuries.
  • Injuries to bystanders from ejected pieces.

Symptoms of a Problem

  • Pieces coming loose inside the unit.
  • Debris piercing through the chute.
  • Material ejecting from the vacuum unexpectedly.
  • Unusual noises or vibrations during operation.
  • Visible damage to chute or housing.
  • Loss of containment of vacuumed material.

What Consumers Should Do

  1. Stop using DR Power Equipment leaf vacuums immediately—these units eject dangerous material.
  2. Locate model number on your unit (front right side behind wheel for walk-behind models; impeller housing beside engine for tow-behind models).
  3. Check if your model number is included in the extensive list of recalled models.
  4. Verify “DR” marking on motor housing.
  5. Contact DR Power LLP toll-free at 877-221-4038 (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday-Friday).

  8. Request free repair kit containing metal outer shield to bolt onto existing chute.
  9. Install metal shield according to provided instructions (DR Power can assist with installation).
  10. If you responded to original May 2024 recall, contact DR Power again for new metal shield remedy.

Expanded Recall with New Remedy

This January 2026 recall represents both a reannouncement and expansion of the original May 2024 recall. DR Power Equipment previously recalled 57,200 leaf blowers and vacuums in May 2024. The current recall expands to 60,250 units by adding new models that were not included in the original recall.

Importantly, this recall offers a new remedy: a free metal outer shield repair kit. Consumers who already responded to the original 2024 recall should nevertheless contact DR Power again to receive the new metal shield remedy, which provides enhanced protection against ejected material.

Laceration Hazard from Ejected Material

The DR Power Equipment leaf vacuums create serious laceration hazards through two distinct failure mechanisms. First, pieces from inside the units can come loose during operation. These internal components, spinning at high speeds, can break free and be violently ejected from the machine. Second, debris being vacuumed can pierce through the chute material, creating projectiles that shoot out at dangerous velocities.

Lacerations from yard equipment occur when sharp objects strike the body with sufficient force to cut through skin and underlying tissue. The leaf vacuums operate with powerful motors that create significant force. When material is ejected from these units, it travels at speeds capable of causing deep, serious cuts. These injuries can affect users operating the equipment and bystanders in the vicinity.

Incident Reports Without Injuries

DR Power Equipment has received 46 reports of loose pieces being ejected from the recalled leaf vacuums. Remarkably, no injuries have been reported despite these 46 incidents. This suggests that users and bystanders have been fortunate to avoid being struck by the ejected material.

However, the absence of reported injuries to date does not diminish the serious nature of the hazard. Forty-six incidents of material ejection represent 46 opportunities for severe injury. The fact that no one has been hurt yet is a matter of luck rather than evidence that the hazard is minor. Each ejection incident posed real danger to anyone nearby.

Long Sale Period: September 2014 Through June 2025

The recalled leaf vacuums were sold continuously for nearly eleven years, from September 2014 through June 2025. This extensive sale period means thousands of households and businesses have been using these defective units for years, accumulating exposure to the laceration hazard over time.

The long sale period also raises questions about when the defect was first identified and what steps were taken to address it. With the original recall in May 2024 covering units sold from the beginning of the sale period, it appears the problem was inherent to the design rather than arising from a manufacturing change or specific production run.

Price Range and Consumer Investment

The recalled leaf vacuums sold for between $1,300 and $4,000, representing significant consumer investments. These are professional-grade or high-end consumer products, not inexpensive yard tools. Buyers purchasing equipment in this price range expect quality construction and safe operation.

The substantial cost of these units makes the laceration hazard particularly concerning. Consumers paid premium prices for what they believed were safe, reliable leaf management tools. Instead, they received dangerous equipment that ejects material at hazardous velocities.

Metal Shield Repair Kit

The new remedy consists of a free repair kit containing a metal outer shield designed to bolt onto the existing chute of the recalled leaf vacuums. The metal shield provides additional barrier protection to prevent ejected material from escaping the unit and striking users or bystanders.

DR Power Equipment provides installation instructions with the repair kit and offers assistance to consumers who need help making the repair. The company can be reached by phone at 877-221-4038 during business hours or by email at recall@drpower.com.

Consumers who already participated in the original May 2024 recall must contact DR Power again to receive the new metal shield remedy. The previous remedy was insufficient, necessitating this enhanced protection measure.

Fast Track Recall Designation

This recall carries the Fast Track Recall designation from the CPSC. Fast Track Recalls are those where the company has committed to specific timeframes and benchmarks for correcting the hazard. This designation indicates DR Power Equipment has agreed to expedited remedial action to address the laceration hazard quickly.

The Fast Track program aims to get dangerous products repaired or replaced more rapidly than traditional recall processes, reducing the time consumers remain exposed to hazards.

Potential for a Tow-Behind Leaf Blower Recall Class Action Lawsuit

Consumers affected by these recalled leaf vacuums may be entitled to compensation through class action litigation. Potential claims include:

  • Sale of defective leaf vacuums that eject dangerous material causing laceration hazards.
  • Design defects allowing internal pieces to come loose and be ejected at high velocity.
  • Manufacturing defects allowing debris to pierce through chutes.
  • Failure to provide adequate protection against ejected material.
  • Economic losses from purchasing expensive equipment ($1,300-$4,000) that requires repair.
  • Diminished value of units even after repair.
  • Costs associated with obtaining and installing repair kits.
  • Loss of use during repair period.
  • Continued use despite known hazards due to inadequate initial remedy.

Potential compensation may cover medical expenses for laceration injuries, emergency room treatment, surgical repair of lacerations, physical therapy, permanent scarring damages, product purchase costs, diminished value of repaired units, and inconvenience damages. While no injuries have been reported despite 46 ejection incidents, consumers who purchased defective units may still be entitled to compensation for economic losses and exposure to serious hazards over many years.

Manufacturer and Distributor Responsibilities

The recalled leaf vacuums were manufactured by Generac Power Systems Inc. of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and distributed by DR Power Equipment of South Burlington, Vermont. Both companies share responsibility for ensuring product safety.

Generac Power Systems, as the manufacturer, was responsible for designing and producing leaf vacuums that safely contain material during operation. The fact that internal pieces can come loose and debris can pierce the chute indicates fundamental design or manufacturing failures.

DR Power Equipment, as the distributor, was responsible for marketing and selling safe products to consumers. The company’s decision to issue an expanded recall with enhanced remedy suggests recognition that the original remedy was inadequate.
