What’s the Problem?

November, 9, 2017 – If you’re thinking about buying your kids one of those trendy fidget spinner gadgets you’ve seen around town this holiday season, you might want to think again. Not only are they lame and sure to be forgotten by this time next year, but they’ve also been known to choke small children and catch fire while being charged (bluetooth models).
And as if these risks weren’t enough, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) Education Fund has found that 2 popular types of fidget spinners sold at Target stores across the U.S. have 300 times the allowable lead for children’s toys, making it possibly the most dangerous kids toy since the Snacktime Cabbage Patch doll, which feasted on dozens of children’s fingers and hair back in the 80s.
The fidget spinners in question — Fidget Wild Spinner Premium Brass and Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal — are sold at Target stores and online for $19.99, and classified as “general use products” instead of toys since they’re marketed to children ages 14 and up.
“The two fidget spinners cited are clearly marked on the package as ‘appropriate for customers ages 14 and older,’ and are not marketed to children,” a Target spokesperson said. “As a result, the fidget spinners identified are not regulated as toys or children’s products and are not required to meet children’s product standards.
