What is Kratom?
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is an herbal supplement most commonly used throughout Southeast Asia for energy and to help ease aches and pains. Derived from a type of evergreen tree, kratom contains alkaloid compounds called mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Although kratom has recently gained widespread popularity in the U.S., researchers who have studied the herb caution that its potential health risks may outweigh any purported benefits.
From 2011-2017, U.S. poison control centers received about 1,800 reports involving use of kratom, including reports of death. About half of these exposures resulted in serious negative outcomes such as seizures and high blood pressure. Five of the 7 infants who were reported to have been exposed to kratom went through withdrawal.
Salmonella Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of a salmonella infection (salmonellosis) include abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea, which begin 12-72 hours after ingesting the bacteria. While “most healthy people recover within a few days without specific treatment,” salmonella infections can lead to life-threatening complications if they spread past patients’ organs, according to the Mayo Clinic.
