What’s the Problem?
The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a press release warning parents to avoid using Summer Infant SwaddleMe By Your Bed Sleepers, as they may have been defectively designed in a way that poses a suffocation risk to babies.
While no injuries or deaths have yet been linked to the SwaddleMe Sleeper, at least 73 babies have died when they suffocated in similarly designed inclined sleepers, according to an investigation by Consumer Reports.
SUMR Brands, formerly known as Summer Infant, Inc., discontinued the SwaddleMe Sleeper in 2018, but has not recalled the product, despite the CPSC urging the company to do so. CPSC does not have the power to force companies to recall their products, and may only issue warnings on potentially defective and/or dangerous products.
The SwaddleMe Sleeper is still available for sale, and may still be being used by consumers who purchased them, CPSC said.
