Why These Steamers Were Defective
The PurSteam steamers suffered from a critical design flaw that caused hot water to be expelled from the steam nozzle during normal use. Rather than producing safe, consistent steam, the defective units would spray scalding hot water directly onto users, creating an unreasonable risk of serious burn injuries.
The hundreds of incident reports spanning multiple years demonstrate that this was not an isolated manufacturing defect but rather a systematic product failure affecting both steamer models. Despite knowing about these dangerous incidents, the steamers remained on the market for years, exposing thousands of additional consumers to burn hazards.
Consumer Product Safety Standards
Household appliances like fabric steamers must meet consumer product safety standards that protect users from unreasonable risks of injury. Products that generate steam or hot water must be designed with adequate safety mechanisms to prevent hot water from being expelled during normal operation. The failure of the PurSteam steamers to prevent hot water expulsion represents a violation of basic safety principles that left consumers vulnerable to preventable injuries.
Manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure their products are safe for their intended use before placing them on the market. When products cause hundreds of incidents and dozens of injuries over multiple years, it raises serious questions about whether adequate safety testing was conducted and whether known defects were adequately addressed.
Potential for a Pursteam Steamer Recall Class Action Lawsuit
Consumers affected by these recalled steamers may be entitled to compensation through class action litigation. Potential claims include:
- Sale of defective steamers with design flaws that caused hot water expulsion and burn injuries.
- Failure to adequately test products for safety before marketing to consumers.
- Continued sale of dangerous products despite hundreds of incident reports and injury claims.
- Failure to warn consumers about serious burn hazards associated with the steamers.
- Marketing unsafe products that violated consumer product safety standards.
- Economic losses from purchasing defective, unusable appliances.
- Medical expenses and pain and suffering from burn injuries.
Potential compensation may cover medical treatment costs for burn injuries, pain and suffering damages, scarring and disfigurement compensation, product purchase costs, emotional distress from burn incidents, and punitive damages for continued sale of dangerous products despite known defects. The documented pattern of hundreds of incidents and dozens of injuries over multiple years strengthens potential claims against the manufacturer.
Federal Law Prohibits Resale
Federal law makes it illegal to sell, resell, or distribute recalled products. PurSteam steamer owners must follow the recall remedy process rather than selling them online, donating to charities, or giving them away. The cord-cutting requirement ensures these dangerous products cannot reach other families who might suffer burn injuries.
