What is Neocate?

Manufactured by Nutricia, Neocate is an amino acid-based elemental formula designed for infants and young children with food and milk allergies. There are a number of products marketed under the brand, including:

  • Neocate Syneo Infant
  • Neocate Infant DHA/ARA
  • Neocate Nutra
  • Neocate Junior
  • Neocate Junior with Probiotics
  • Neocate Splash

What’s the Problem?

In April 2017, a study published in the journal Bone looked at a cohort of 51 children who had been diagnosed with unexplained hypophosphatemia. Testing indicated skeletal radiographs, fractures, undermineralization, or rickets in 94% of the cases. The researchers found that many of the subjects were fed diets of Neocate formulas and nothing else. Once they were given supplemental phosphate or switched to a different formula, the children improved, according to the study.
“The widespread nature of the findings lead us to strongly recommend careful monitoring of mineral metabolism in children fed EF (elemental formula),” the researchers said. “Transition to alternative formula use or implementation of phosphate supplementation should be performed cautiously with as severe hypocalcemia may develop.”

Hypophosphatemia Symptoms

  • Abnormal eye movements (nystagmus)
  • Convulsions
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle spasms / cramps
  • Muscle weakness
  • Numbness

Is There a Warning on Neocate?

Nutricia in March 2016 issued a warning which indicated that babies given Neocate as a primary or sole source of nutrition “should be routinely monitored by clinicians.” This warning is inadequate and does not mention the link with hypophosphatemia or rickets, nor does it describe the seriousness of these conditions.

Neocate Side Effects

Serious side effects of Neocate formula include:

  • Rickets
  • Hypophosphatemia (electrolyte disturbance characterized by low blood phosphate serum levels)
  • Bone fractures
  • Other, bone-related diseases
  • Allergic reactions
  • And more
