Update: Briggs & Stratton Log Splitters Recalled After Reports of Broken Wrists

The CPSC on May 12, 2021, announced the recall for about 19,630 YTL, Longli and TIYA Log Splitters with Briggs & Stratton 250cc engines after at least 2 users suffered broken wrists. “An incorrect engine ignition coil and flywheel can lead to hard starting and engine kick back, posing an injury hazard to the operator,” CPSC said.

The recalled log splitters were sold at Atwood; Big Blue; D&B Supply Co.; Fleet Farm; Home Depot Canada (Online); L&M Supply Inc.; Lowe’s stores; Lowe’s Canada (Online); Menards; Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply; Norby; North 40 Outfitters; Quincy Farm Supply Co.; Running Supply Inc.; Rural King; Theisen Supply Inc.; and Western Big Inc. stores nationwide from March 2016 through February 2021 for about $1,400.

The CPSC Recall Number for these items is 21-133.

What’s the Problem?

This NHTSA Recall began on Nov. 24, 2020, and affects:

  • 2017-2019 Toro model 22618 Log Splitter
  • 2017-2020 Toro model 22618HD Log Splitter

“The tow pole mounting plates could bend after the log splitter is towed off curbs, over railroad tracks or into potholes, causing the tow pole bolts to break,” NHTSA said. “If the tow pole bolts break, the log splitter could tip over or detach, increasing the risk of a crash.”

If you purchased a log splitter that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact your local Toro dealer for a free upgraded attachment plate and additional reinforcement bolts.

Owners may contact Toro customer service at 1-800-654-1882.
